Salzburg.

 17/4/17 - 22/4/17.

One of the most beautiful places I think I’ll ever have the pleasure of visiting.

Stiegl Brewery
Pictured: Page 1, bottom left.

Relatively cheap, free with the Salzburg card. We got to learn all about the brewing of Stiegl beers on the tour, and got samples of 3 different brews. We also got a small red Stiegl mug as a free gift at the end!

Salzburg lock bridge.
Pictured: Page 1, lower central.

There are so many locks on the bridge, it’s quite the site! When we went there was also a lovely busker at the end of the bridge adding some background music for us to put our lock on to. The locks look lovely against the backdrop of the mountains.

Untersberg

The very first place we visited was Untersberg. We went up in the cable car for free with the Salzburg Card. Such beautiful views! There’s also a little café at the top to get a drink or something to eat whilst you’re up there.

Scavenger Escape Rooms
Pictured: Page 2, top left.

Escape rooms are always a little bit more expensive, especially when there’s only two of you – but they’re lots of fun! We went three times and did a different room each time. I really enjoyed the Egyptian Adventure and Mozart’s Mystery. Secret Surgery wasn’t quite as enjoyable for me, I would suggest maybe having more than 2 players for that room.  The lady who worked there was lovely and really tried to immerse us in the game by getting into character.

Hellbrunn

Free with the Salzburg Card. Hellbrunn had a lovely palace and gardens, but the real treat was the tour around all the fountains. The tour guide had some fantastic and comical stories about the trick fountains, and their were some amazing scenes which came to life using waterwork systems too. The gazebo used in ‘The Sound of Music’ was also found up at Hellbrunn, which was pretty cool to see!

Salzburg Zoo
Pictured: Page 1, bottom right.

Relatively cheap, free with the Salzburg card. Fairly standard zoo, we visited on the way back from Untersberg. It’s not too big which makes it manageable, but there’s a lovely selection of animals. My favourite animals were the goats and the bears. The bears were just amazing to see, and the goats were so funny to listen to!

Gasthof Turnerwirt

This was a cosy little hotel. The staff were very friendly and super helpful! The bus stopped right outside.  Breakfast is offered but we didn’t try it, opting instead to eat out. It was a lovely quiet little hotel and I’d happily stay there again.

Imlauer

This was a lovely little restaurant. The food was delicious! The staff were lovely and the room was spacious. We went twice. The second time because we loved the first time so much! It is attached to a hotel, but we weren’t staying there. If we were we probably wouldn’t have eaten anywhere else! It was delicious!

Haus der Natur
Pictured: Page 3, Top ticket.

Cheap entry. This was a pretty cool science museum right in the heart of Salzburg. Lots of interactive displays to enjoy! There were a lot of children there, which did mean it was a bit crowded – but a bit of fun nonetheless!

Salz Welten

This was a bit of a trek. We had to take a train, then a bus to get there – but it was enjoyable. We got to travel down a slide into the mines, then were guided around by a knowledgeable guide who told all about the mine’s history. There were little movies every so often, and at one point we even got to step foot into Germany! Finally we were given our own little pot of salt as a free gift, then we enjoyed some food in the café there.

The Heart of Joy café.

I loved this place! It had such a lovely atmosphere. It’s a little vegetarian café where we went for breakfast twice. My favourite thing about it, besides the little motivational cards you were given, was the fact I could get a decent cup of tea! I feel like when travelling in Europe I spend a long time looking for a good brew – these guys do a brilliant English breakfast tea!

Salzburg Card

I mentioned this a few times in this post – it is definitely worth the money! You get free entry into so many attractions and museums and a lot of other attractions are heavily discounted. We made our money back on this very quickly! You can buy it for 1, 2 or 3 days and is also valid on local buses!

Hamburg.

Hamburg Chocolate Museum.

The chocolate museum was great! Easy to find and cheap entry. We got a 90 minute tour (in German, but always summarised the main points in English) where we got to learn a bit more about what goes into making chocolate, as well as getting to create our own chocolate bar.

HSV Museum and Stadium Tour

A little bit more out of the way, but cheap entry. It's a nice stadium, pretty classic. Some lovely trophies and memorabilia. The tour guide seemed enthusiastic, but honestly I haven't a clue what was said as it was all in German. Worth the trip to make my boyfriend smile!

Miniature Wonderland

This was pretty impressive! Cheap entry. The attention to detail in this large scale model railway was amazing! I loved that you got to see it all in 'day time' and 'night time' view too. I particularly enjoyed looking out for all the hidden adult scenes. So much fun!

Baseler Hof

Lovely hotel, would definitely stay there again. Right in the centre, but the desk also offers free transport around Hamburg.

The Greggs of Hamburg. Standard chain bakery, but a million times better because...hello...German pastries?! Yum! Ein donut please.

Escape Room

There are plenty of escape rooms in Hamburg, I'm not sure what led us to this one - but it was good fun! A bit more of an expensive excursion, the price would be more manageable with more team members. We tackled 'Casa Moretta'. This was my first escape room and it spurred on a bit of a love for them, so it must be good!
